Artist Portfolio Student Exhibit

The Artist’s Portfolio student exhibit comes to a close this week, holding its closing ceremony this Thursday, December 1, in the Helen S. Smith Gallery.

The exhibit is the final project for ART180, a capstone class for students pursuing degrees in art or, in some cases, careers as an artist, art tech, art teacher, or simply chasing the passion.

As part of the class, students assemble portfolios, websites, and eventually the design of the Artist’s Portfolio exhibit. Throughout the quarter, they are taught how to choose their best work, and arrange an effective gallery.

Each of the artists featured in the exhibit will be in attendance at the ceremony to engage in conversation with guests, answer any questions, and share their extended portfolio. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

If guests are interested in purchasing any of the works featured, they can leave a message in the gallery’s comment book or contact Paul Metivier, the gallery director.

The Portfolio exhibit has become a Fall tradition ever since 2004, when the Art Department first began teaching the program.

The exhibit is one of the most popular of the year, said Cindy Small of the Art Department, giving students, faculty, and other guest the opportunity to see what the art students have been up to while giving the artists the chance to acknowledge who they are as artists.

“We have heard over the years that this class is one of the most important art classes we teach because it causes the student to really think about who they are as an artist and why they do what they do,” Small said.
