Advising day

Wednesday, April 26 was spring quarter’s advising day, students from all walks of life came from 9am to 6pm to plan their futures.

If you’ve ever had any doubts about your future, advising day is for you. Students who attended advising day gained helpful advice on topics such as which classes to take and how to pay for college. Nobody wants to spend all their hard earned cash and sweat on a degree if it won’t help them to get the career that they want. Advising day is a good opportunity for students to find out if taking archery classes will really help them become doctors, or if learning how to repair transaxles is required of aspiring philosophers.

These students were able to meet with faculty advisors from their individual areas of interest and gain valuable information on how to pursue their dreams from people who specialize in working to help make dreams come true. Many of these faculty advisors were centered in the Student Union building.

Help was also to be found in the library though. I spoke with a couple employees of the college who had set up a table in the entrance of the building. They explained that they were there to help students sign up for classes. There are many international students at Green River College who come from various backgrounds and not all of them are fluent in english yet. In these cases advising day is a very valuable resource, if someone is new to the country and the language then it can be helpful to have someone available to guide them in registering for classes.

Many people choose to sign up for financial aid on advising day as well. Sometimes trying to fill out a lot of different forms such as the FAFSA can be complicated and overwhelming. Many people are put off from trying to apply for financial aid for this very reason, and convince themselves that they never would of qualified anyway. But it’s free money, and you can’t know for sure that you won’t qualify until you apply. All students should make a point of applying for some form of financial aid, because it doesn’t cost anything to get an application.

If you’ve already got your future planned out, and you’ve already applied for financial aid, you may be thinking that there’s no reason for you attend advising day, but that’s where you’re wrong, everyone should attend advising day. All students are eligible to enter a drawing on advising day with a variety of available prizes. These prizes range from gift cards for the Paper Tree Bookstore to reserved parking spots. If you dislike getting up hours before your first class just so you can park at Pacific Raceways then this drawing is for you, an open parking spot everyday at any time is a dream come true.

If you missed this quarter’s advising day then definitely consider coming next quarter, there’s something for everybody so you’d be a fool to miss out.
