Women’s Basketball Team Smashes Shoreline

Lady Gators dominates Shoreline in a historic performance.

The Lady Gators defeat Shoreline in a non-conference game on Thursday. Head Coach Demetrius McQuarn and Assistant Coach Markeith Brown have developed a new culture in the Women’s Basketball program.
The Green River Gators dominated the Shoreline Dolphins by scoring 113 points.

That’s right, 113 big ones in one game. The Lady Gators did not just play offense, the Dolphins were held to only ten points the entire game. The game was electrifying. 

The Gators are still undefeated while playing in The Swamp. They are 2-0 at home with another impressive win against Multnomah University, Saturday, November 18th. The next home game will be against a tough Bellevue team on December, 8th.

The Gators held the Shoreline Dolphins to only two points in the first quarter and a total of zero points in the second and third quarter. At the fourth quarter the Gators gave up seven points as, Coach McQuarn substituted his bench players to finish off the game in an attempt to rest his starters and allow the other girls more game time.

The Gators started early and dropped a whopping 30 points in the first quarter and followed up with 31 points in the second quarter. A total of 61 points in the first half which is very impressive.
Gators concluded the game scoring 28 in the third and 24 in the fourth quarter. These ladies were on fire. 

Courtney Youngblood had an outstanding game scoring the team’s season high so far, 20 points in a single game. Youngblood flirted with a double-double, a term used to describe a double digit total in one of five categories; points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots. Youngblood followed up her 20 point game with nine assists. She was also 10 out of 16 from the field, making 60 percent of her shots.

Kayla Hyppolite came close to a triple-double, accumulating double digits in three of the five categories,  with 18 points, eight rebounds and six steals. She shot an impressive 50 percent from the field.

Another impressive performer was Dayna-Joy Calubaquib. Calubaquib accomplished a double-double with 16 points and 11 steals while shooting 66 percent from the field, which is the highest of all of the starting five. She was also only four steals away from tying with a 22 year old school record of 15 steals in one game.

Overall, the team had an fantastic win with almost everyone scoring at least 10 points. Seven out of 10 players met double digit points and the team as a whole shot for 60 percent from the field.

The Lady Gators nearly broke two team records at Green River College against Shoreline. The most steals in one game by a Gator team is sitting at 30 and the Gators had steals 29 against Shoreline! They were also 9 points away from breaking the most points in one game by a Gator team which is a 25 year old record sitting at 122.

However, the Gators did break two records in Green River history. The Lady Gators broke the Margin of Victory record, by defeating Shoreline by 103 points. That is the largest win in Green River history! They also broke the record for the most assists in one game, the new record is now 36.

The Lady Gators have three consecutive away games. Dec. 2, they will play Linn Benton in Oregon, they will then Travel to Portland CC the next day. Then they will have a five day rest period to prepare for their next road game against an impressive Everett team who is undefeated.

Fun Fact: the Lady Gators are currently ranked 6th in steals in the entire NWAC and ranked 3rd in defensive points/points off turnovers.

The Gators have a very bright future. They have a tough schedule ahead of them, but if they continue to play together as a team and perform like they did against Shoreline, they will have a very successful season.
