I Asked a Man

I asked a man on Friday
If he would donate just a dime
He sneered—and here he say:
“You are wasting your time”
I asked this man if he would only
Give the poor a chance
I could tell that he was lonely
For he grimaced at my glance
I asked a man on Friday
Why he had no money to lend
He stopped me and looked away
“The church is where I spend”
I asked this man if he had
Any faith in the people
“If I did, why am I a cad
Praying below a steeple”
I asked a man on Saturday
Who was smoking a cigarette
If he was afraid to die someday
He replied: “You bet”
I asked this man why he inhaled
Such rotten nicotine
He told me that God would prevail
And still his soul is clean
I asked a man on Saturday
If he was afraid to die
His lungs choked out an ashtray
His mouth merely spoke “Why?”
I asked this man if he would give
Just a moment of his time
To try to search out more to live
God won’t save you for this crime
I asked a man on Sunday
Why he visited confession
He sins, even so, he prays
He said God forgives, no question
I asked this man why he believed
God and Heaven to be true
“The Bible has killed and schemed
More than it’s saved you”
I asked a man on Sunday
Why he preached to all the children
He said he stood there every day
To give something to believe in
A man asked me on Saturday
Why I was weak, so wrong
I looked and found God in his pain
“I’m not,” I said, “I’m strong.”
