Lunar New Year Party Organized For Students To Celebrate Year Of The Dog

Information compiled by Nahrawend Gheribi and Mario Garcia.

The Lunar New Year is fast approaching and Green River is preparing to celebrate.

The Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year, is celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. This festival is the most important, longest public holiday in Asia and has been celebrated for over 4000 years.

The Chinese New Year animals are represented through the cycle of twelve signs. Each new year was marked by the characteristics of one of the 12 zodiac animals: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. This year is the year of the dog, and the best traits of this animal’s character are sincerity courage and cleverness.

The International Programs and Student Life departments organize every year to prep for the holiday celebration with traditional dancing, cultural performances, and food. There will be authentic Chinese cuisine.
Both local students and international students get the opportunity to discover and explore this traditional holiday by joining the Lunar New Year party organized by International Programs on February 16 at 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., located in the Lindblom Student Union Building, Grand Hall.

Yujin Choi, who is in charge of this celebration would like to tell all Green River students, “I hope many students attend the party because this is a party but it is also a social place to meet new people and meet new cultures.”

Students can go to enjoy the casino, raffle, mirror photo booth, refreshments, and a DJ dance party and have the chance to meet new people.

The party’s tickets can be purchased online on www.campusce.net. Entry is $5 for Green River College students and $10 for non-students. Advance ticket sales will end at noon on Feb 16, 2018. After that, ALL TICKETS WILL BE $10. The Student Life office has no refund policy.

All the information related to the Lunar New Year is available on the main website for Green River College, and for further questions or concerns, students can contact internationalprograms@greenriver.edu.
