Seattle’s Teams Sports Finals

By Jack Morrell

All of Seattle’s professional sports teams have found enormous amounts of success over the years. Despite the restrictions and modifications, the year has brought everybody, Seattle sports have proven that 2020 would not hold them back.

Seattle’s NHL franchise gets a name: The Kraken. Earlier this year, the name and logos of the Seattle Kraken were announced. At the same time, an $800+ million renovation of the Climate Pledge Arena, formally known as Key Arena, and practice facility in Northgate are under way. The team begins play in the fall of 2021. The Kraken, which is a giant squid-like mythological creature, will face a significant challenge in trying to parallel the smash success of the Vegas Golden Knights, which entered the league in 2017 and most recently played in Stanley Cup finals.

The Seahawks get a winner: Another top sporting event of this year is still under way. Quarterback Russell Wilson is building a Hall of Fame-worthy resume with receiver-weapons like D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. After defeating the divisional rival Arizona Cardinals 28-21 in Week 11 of the current NFL season, Wilson’s 93rd career victory as a starter moved him past Peyton Manning for the most ever in a quarterback’s first nine seasons in the league. Wilson also started the season by joining Steve Young as one of the only two quarterbacks in the history of the NFL with 30,000+ passing yards and 4,000+ rushing yards. Wilson has continued to hit different milestones throughout the season, including becoming the third quarterback in NFL history to have at least four straight seasons with 30+ touchdown passes. With a promising remining schedule moving forward, Wilson and the Seahawks will look to cap off the year with several more accomplishments.

So does the Seattle Storm: The local member of the WNBA swept the Las Vegas Aces in a best-of-five series back in October and won its fourth championship overall and second in the last three years. The Storm had largely the same core group that won in 2018, led by Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd. The Storm joined Minnesota and Houston as the only franchises to win four championships.

And the Seattle Sounders: The success story continues this December as the Sounders, led by forwards Jordan Morris and Raúl Ruidiaz, will compete for the MLS cup for the second year in a row. After an amazing come-from-behind victory against the Minnesota United, the team will play against Columbus Crew Saturday December 12, 2020. The Sounders have shown complete domination in past MLS cups, defeated Toronto FC twice in the past four years. This is the Sounders fourth appearance in the MLS Cup since 2016, as the club has put together an astounding group of guys.
